From its very first print edition to its innovative veterinary drug interaction checker, Plumb’s has always been inspired by one guiding principle: to keep animals safe. A staple in veterinary practices and teaching hospitals for 30 years, this trusted reference book has evolved into a continually updated, easy-to-use platform, accessible from any device.

In 1991, Donald C. Plumb, PharmD, then director of pharmacy services at University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center, published the first official edition of the Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook.
Armed with a manual on self-publishing and a family willing to fulfill book orders from the basement, he set his sights on creating a single veterinary drug reference with clinically relevant dose recommendations—an essential resource that didn’t yet exist in veterinary medicine.Read Dr. Plumb’s story
Over the next 30 years, Dr. Plumb published 8 more editions, each growing in scope and relevance—and size. The recent ninth edition clocked in at a massive 1,456 pages and more than 6 pounds.
As the book grew too big for our pockets, the need for a digital version of Plumb’s became clear.
Early efforts—like the Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook for PalmPilot—were plagued by the limitations of the technology. It was still easier to flip through the book than scroll through hundreds of drugs with a stylus.
In 2014, Elizabeth Green, Brief Media’s CEO and founder, pitched Dr. Plumb an idea: collaborate with Brief Media to bring this esteemed veterinary drug reference to a modern web and mobile app. He didn’t need much convincing.
Our devoted in-house team, a high-quality development firm out of Texas, and a network of practicing veterinarians spent 12 months poring over each decision with Dr. Plumb, from the way we formatted drug monographs down to the font color we used to highlight updates. We built Plumb’s Veterinary Drugs piece by piece, with a genuine desire to create a tool that would save us time in practice every day.
As we launched the digital platform and updates for the ninth edition got underway, the team continued to grow. Veterinary pharmacist James Budde, PharmD, DICVP—then the pharmacy manager at UW Veterinary Care at University of Wisconsin–Madison—started out writing updates and quickly became associate editor and Dr. Plumb’s protégé.
After entrusting Brief Media with the ongoing development of Plumb’s, Dr. Plumb handed the role of editor-in-chief to Dr. Budde.

In the months that followed, an extensive team of veterinary specialists, veterinarians, veterinary pharmacists, and content editors—led by Dr. Budde and Dr. McCluskey—worked tirelessly to refine and continually update the content, mirroring the careful peer-review process that makes Clinician’s Brief the most essential publication in the veterinary industry.
Today, Plumb’s is an intuitive, easy-to-use platform that pairs the up-to-date drug information that veterinarians trust with practical, time-saving tools—from a drug interaction checker and built-in conversion calculator to a library of more than 550 drug information sheets for pet owners. And we’re not done—we’re constantly aiming higher.
We are working toward our vision of building an in-the-workflow decision support tool where veterinarians can find the information they need most in one simple place, where they’re already going every day for trusted drug information. We can’t wait to share it with you.
